GEM-CAR 2022 Advanced Installation

The GEM-CAR 14 modules will be progressively migrated to GEM-CAR 2022 in the years to come. To benefit from these new upgraded modules, additional software must be installed. GEM-CAR 2022 uses the Microsoft MSIX installation package technology that offers many advantages. Applications using this technology being signed, they offer increased security and don't need administrator rights.

You must install GEM-CAR 2022 on computers running Windows 10 or Windows Server 2019. If your computers are running an anterior version of Windows, see upgrade to Windows 10.

Channels and environments

GEM-CAR 2022 uses two channels and to two environments. The production channel and environment are intended for normal usage and the staging channel and environment for development and testing. The channels and environments should normally match. However, in rare cases, the technical support team could ask you to install GEM-CAR 2022 in a mismatch configuration.

Channels

Channels correspond to the source of installation and update files. GEM-CAR 2022 uses the following two channels.

Production: The installation and update files for the last officially released version of GEM-CAR 2022 are downloaded from the production channel. This default channel can then be used by customers and the development or technical support teams.

Staging: The installation and update files for the last unreleased test version of GEM-CAR 2022 are downloaded from the staging channel. This channel should therefore only be used for development and testing purposes. In rare cases, the technical support team could ask customers to use the staging channel.

Environments

Environments correspond to the database types. GEM-CAR 2022 uses the following two environments.

Production: The databases in the production environment contain real data. They are owned by GEM-CAR, but the data they contain is owned by customers. This default environment can then be used by customers and the development or technical support teams.

Staging: The databases in the staging environment contain fake data that can be modified or deleted at any time. This environment should therefore only be used for development and testing purposes. In rare cases, the technical support team could ask customers to use the staging environment.

Installation

Production

If the GEM-CAR technical support team doesn't ask you otherwise, install GEM-CAR 2022 using the production channel and environment. To do so, follow the instructions provided on the GEM-CAR 2022 regular installation page.

Staging

To install GEM-CAR 2022 in a staging configuration, follow the instructions in the subsections below. First download and install the staging version of the software and then add a system environment variable to Windows 10 to set the staging environment.

Install GEM-CAR 2022

To install GEM-CAR 2022, follow the instructions below.

  1. Go to the GEM-CAR installation website.
  2. Select the language for the GEM-CAR test version. Don't install the latest version that corresponds to the production version of the application.
  3. Select Download.
  4. Find the V2V.GemCar.Desktop.Setup.appinstaller file in your download folder and open it.
  5. Select Install.

Failed installation due to app sideloading

Some versions of Windows have app sideloading disabled by default. Therefore, Windows may warn you that the application can't be installed because it's not from the Microsoft Store. Fortunately, you can activate app sideloading in Windows settings.

System environment variable

To configure the staging environment for GEM-CAR 2022, add the DOTNET_ENVIRONMENT system environment variable to Windows 10 using the variable provided by the technical support team.
